Summary of Role

The role of an Electrician involves fitting, repairing and testing electrical circuits and wiring a wide variety of residential and commercial settings. This can also include the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical machinery and instruments. For health and safety reasons, it is important to be educated and up to date with current safety regulations within the role.

There are various routes available to training as an electrician – The easiest and most common way being via an apprenticeship scheme. Aimed at those under 25 years of age, this popular scheme has a duration of two to four years and combines theory-based learning with practical application, but does not achieve a full qualification. Instead, in order to register as a fully qualified electrician it is compulsory to complete the relevant NVQ.
